11 Great Reasons to be an AFFP Member
1. Lecture Series
The AFFP lecture series focuses on educating pre-medical women about topics ranging from interacting with diverse populations in the medical setting, bioethics, study skills, biopsychosocial medicine, medical school application workshops, environmental health, and medical panel discussions lead by female physicians and medical students, to name a few.
2. Community Service Projects
Members are encouraged to get involved in AFFP community service projects. Group projects range from volunteering in drug treatment centers, empowering young girls through athletics, raising money for cancer research, tutoring underprivileged children, or working in soup kitchens.
3. Physician & Medical Student Shadowing
AFFP has a diverse network of physicians and medical students that members can shadow. Choose from a variety of specialties and medical settings to learn from or spend a day with an AMWA medical student.
4. Brown Bag Lunch Series
Bring your own lunch to the AFFP Brown Bag Lunch Series. Each lunch will have a different topic. Discuss issues facing pre-medical women, women in medicine, or other healthcare issues. Occasionally guest lecturers or physicians will lead us in these discussions.
5. Social Opportunities
Get to know your fellow pre-medical students and form lifelong friendships. Join AFFP members for informal dinners, barbeques or hikes.
6. AMWA Mentor Program
This unique program offers support to upper level pre-medical students by current female medical students. Get advice on the application process, personal statements, interviewing, school selection, and other critical questions.
7. AFFP Mentoring
Junior and senior AFFP members will mentor freshman and sophomores. Learn which classes to take, how to study, when to apply, how to get involved in research, plus more valuable information.
8. Diversity
The Association of Future Female Physicians consists of a diverse group of women who are committed to supporting women from all ages, races, religions, socio-economic backgrounds, and sexual orientations. AFFP believes that all members benefit from the experiences of others and we strongly encourage a diverse membership.
9. Community Forum
Members will have access to an AFFP community forum website. Discuss issues regarding academics, form study groups, discuss family, religious or diversity issues, get tips from those who just took the MCAT, find out about the latest research, volunteer and physician shadowing opportunities, and much more.
10. Leadership
Members have the unique opportunity to gain valuable leadership experience in the first student organization in the nation dedicated to helping pre-medical women achieve their goals. AFPP is constantly looking for women who have the talent, drive and ambition to lead other women and the organization. Plus, committee members work with influential people in the community which can lead to excellent letters of recommendation. Join AFFP today and gain the valuable insight of leading future female physicians into the future.
