How to start an AFPP chapter at your university:

We need a minimum of three to five outstanding pre-medical students to act as committee members during the first year.  These committee members will help establish:

  1. Organization. File student organization papers with the university.  Check for available funding. Establish a network with educators, physicians, and people who will help advance AFFP.
  2. Calendar of Events. Create a plan of events for the coming semester and/or year.  Each semester there should be at least one medical panel discussion consisting of female medical students, residents and physicians.  There should also be group volunteer events, social activities and educational opportunities scheduled.
  3. Membership Network. With the assistance of pre-professional advising the AFFP chapter should actively recruit pre-medical women and ensure they are receiving the education and support to help members throughout their undergraduate years.  Recruiting is one of the most essential elements in the first year and will help establish a strong network of pre-medical women within the organization.
  4. Financing. Local chapters will need to collect membership dues, apply for university funding (if available), and conduct fundraising events to help supplement program funding.  In addition, chapters will need to open a checking account within the first sixty days.

What does AFFP provide chapters?

  1. Support. AFFP National Committee members will provide support on all aspects of running a chapter from organizing events, developing community service programs and recruiting members.
  2. Resources. AFFP will provide chapters with electronic copies of existing AFFP marketing collateral (Brochures, Posters, Flyers)

How much does it cost?

Membership fees for 4-years of undergraduate study are $35.00 per member. From those fees, the following amount is paid out per member:

  • $25 paid to AMWA
  • $2 paid to AFFP – National

That leaves $8 per member to help supplement programs.  Any additional expenses will need to be underwritten by the university student government, fundraising and grants.
